Lab Services

Medical Laboratory Technician

Part-time one day per week plus fill in for vacation and days off.
Flexibility and strong phlebotomy skills a must.

This position is responsible for performing all necessary functions required to provide accurate lab results that assist providers in determining appropriate patient diagnosis in a timely manner.

Collect & prepare lab specimens in a manner that helps assure quality results.

  • Perform phlebotomy according to SOP
  • Adhere to proper labeling and specimen tracking requirements
  • Perform EKG testing ordered
  • Place IV ports as needed to assist other departments with their diagnostic procedures

Provide patient education to ensure good customer service.

Educate the patient on:

    1. The phlebotomy procedure
    2. Consent necessities
    3. The patient's responsibilities during the procedure
    4. Approximate turn around time data and
    5. How they will receive their results from the ordering physician

Answer any questions about the tests being performed.

Execute all lab requests and report out accurate results.

  • Perform testing utilizing knowledge of lab equipment and processes.
  • Review all results for accuracy, quality and reasonability.
  • Route all results to ordering providers in a timely manner using lab processes.
  • Maintain a clean and neat environment for both patients and staff safety.

Perform quality checks daily, and as needed, to assure best results for accurate diagnosis.

  • Maintain lab equipment by performing maintenance as required by the manufacturer.
  • Prepare and run Quality Control according to lab standards.
  • Document QC values and utilize knowledge of controls to watch for abnormalities.

Provide administrative support and maintain lab paperwork to assist in department efficiency.

  • Obtains and files patient reports; reviews patient files to identify discrepancies.
  • Conduct accuracy audit of charge slips to verify proper documentation.
  • Maintain supplies for all areas and stock supplies when needed.

Attend and participate in facility and department functions to demonstrate commitment to facility goals and personal growth.

  • Takes an active role in committees involved in quality and improvement efforts.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings on a regular basis.
  • Keeps up on department and facility issues by reading memos, newsletters, etc.

Participates with and follows all safety guidelines as directed by the Safety officer and the facility to assure a safe workplace and compliance with governing regulations.

  • Hazardous Waste Program
    1. Recognize the Hazardous waste, both pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical (supply) that is handled in the course of a normal work day.
    2. Safely handle, process and dispose of the hazardous waste encountered.
    3. Move and inspect hazardous waste containers when/if assigned.
    4. Attend annual update training if scheduled
  • OSHA Program
    1. Comply with safety techniques learned in department training.
    2. Report all exposure and injury incidents per WH policy.
    3. Have any exposures or injuries evaluated per WH policy.
    4. Report all unsafe conditions to the OSHA officer or dept supervisor.
    5. Attend the annual update training as scheduled, each 12 months.
    6. Receive an annual TB screening as scheduled or provide documentation of a test, each 12 months.
    7. Receive the Hepatitis vaccination series, decline or provide documentation as requested.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED, and completion of an accredited laboratory technician program. Current license from ASCP or NCA.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of technical applications such as operation of lab equipment and lab safety
  • Knowledge of normal lab reference ranges
  • Knowledge of lab tests and their meaning
  • Knowledge of inter-relationships of departments and services at WestHealth
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations that apply to lab testing to maintain license
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of and skill in using a personal computer and related software (such as LIS)

Urgent Care

R. N. Urgent Care Supervisor

Previous supervisor/charge experience required.

Job Purpose:

This position is responsible for the supervision of employees and the management of clinic processes to ensure optimal experiences for patients who use the Urgent Care facility and the employees who work in the department.

Manages the selection, training, development and performance of assigned staff to retain a motivated, professional work staff that provides quality care to patients.

  • Interviews and recommends RN, LPN and MA candidates to Director or HR for hire into the Department (E)
  • Appraises performance of staff and prepares performance reviews. (E)
  • Disciplines and/or counsels staff when performance issues arise.

Discusses with Director or HR if serious situations arise (E)

  • Trains and instructs staff on nursing procedures and administrative processes during orientation and as needed (M)
  • Communicates with staff on a regular basis as to new processes, depart and facility updates and employee development programs. (M)

Creates a written work schedule that assigns appropriate staff to all shifts to ensure proper patient and efficient department flow.

  • Produces a work schedule according to facility and department policy. (E)
  • Takes into account and accommodates when possible employee requests for time off. (E)
  • Distributes schedules at least one week prior to the end of the existing one. (M)
  • Helps charge RN fill sick and emergency calls (M)

Job Specifications

Education and Experience:
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license with at least 5 years applicable clinical experience and one year of management exposure or equivalent.

Physician Assistant

  • PT16 hours a week (work schedule is mixed days, evenings, weekends).  Benefit eligible.

Job Purpose:

  • See Urgent Care patients on a daily basis working with and under the supervision of the doctor on duty.
    • Make sure that all charts are co-signed by the supervising physician on that shift.
    • Maintain a patient per hour rate of 2.5-3.5 average over the course of a year.
    • Receive acceptable reviews from medical director regarding medical performance each year.
    • Follow SOP where PA participation is written.
    • Work with nursing staff in areas of patient flow, patient convenience and department essential functions.
  • Dictate all reports daily attempting to include all parameters necessary for high quality ICD9 codes.
  • Complete any missed reports as soon as possible after notification.
  • Complies with all safety and health standards.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to use their education and experience as a Physician Assistant to evaluate and treat patients in a professional manner. Able to process patients correctly and in the most efficient way possible in the urgent care setting while working under the supervision of the doctor on duty. Communicate and interact professionally with all nursing staff and other providers.

Minimum Education/Experience Requirements:

Bachelors degree in conjunction with the completion with an accredited Physician Assistant program. Must hold a current MN license and complete the continuing education requirements each year to retain that license.

Physical Demands:

5-10 hour shifts are scheduled but some weeks may exceed 40 hours of work time depending on department volumes. Employee must be able to stand and walk for up to 4 hours at a time between breaks. Employee must be able to read, write, understand basic computer functions and be able to use the phone as well as the dictation system. Some assembly and manipulation of small parts and instruments is required for equipment use and treatment applications.

Working Conditions:

All work is performed in a clinical setting where exposure to infectious material and other hazardous agents are a possibility. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential function of the position.
