Orthopedics is the area of medicine that deals with bones and joints. Specialists treat disorders of the skeletal system and related muscles, joints and ligaments that may result from sports injuries, work-related injuries, childhood growth disorders and accidents. Physiatry (also called physical medicine and rehabilitation) includes the diagnosis and treatment of patients with musculoskeletal, neurologic or other body systems impairments or disabilities. Physiatrists provide rehabilitative treatment for patients who have experienced a catastrophic injury such as stroke, spinal cord injury or brain injury. They focus on restoring physical, psychological, social and vocational function as well as alleviating pain.
